There was an interesting artlice posted on MSN today.

Being in a HUGE family, I am all about saving a buck but when I read the first few lines of this article I was kind of grossed out. After reading through the entire article and looking at the link sites, I found this pretty cool.
There are some things that I won't be eating if the date stamped on it was yesterday but it reminded me of when I was a kid. My mom, brother and I all went grocery shopping and when you walked into the store there were 2 grocery baskets full of cans sodas, boxes, cans without labels, etc. Each basket was $40 but my mom went and found the manager and told him she would take both of them off his hands for $50.
It took us forever to unload the 2 packed down vehciles and I'm sure that the guy who took our groceries out hated us. At first we ate all the things that we knew what they were. Then things got interesting.
It was like a surprise opening a can to find out what was inside. We saved this food from getting put into the landfills, we got a good deal on groceries and it was fun.
Another thing that happened in our family was when my brother and dad worked in the produce section of the grocery store when they first relocated. When the fruit would start to turn or it was past the date when they could sell it, they brought it home. We made jellies, froze stuff, gave stuff away.
All in all I think this is a smart way to do things and something I might be looking into more.
Loved that story. Did you ever figure out how much you saved?

Hmmmm.......very interesting to think about! My growing up memories living w/ a frugal single mom consisted of having a garden for fresh veggies and my grandma did lots of canning and jelly making too. Now following from todays parade come by and say hello when ya get a chance :)

That's a fun story. It can actually be kind of fun to be frugal and although you might not have liked the situation at the time, it made for fun memories. At least, it sounded fun to me!! I'll check the above link out. Found you through the MOnday mingle.

Wow great post, gleaning...happens to me lots. I always by bread that is going out of date on that date or day before & freeze it. I used to work for a university where the food safety guru gave us a training on food & expire dates. One thing I will never forget he said, there is so much "stuff" in salad dressing you could never hurt it! scary, Come visit sometime
