http://www.k104fm.com/ have what is referred to as the morning mix. I missed it this morning and instead listened to one of many contraversial conversations that they have on thier morning talk raido show.
The quesiton was posed, "Should people in jail and prision have the luxuries of home"?
Let me chunk my disclaimers out:
1. I have very Liberal views 98% of the time, I voted for our now President and would do it again and I am the outcast in terms of views in my family.
2. I have been to jail not prision. I usually don't share that but I feel it is important and I will even go into the details. Married to the ex-husband, go to the store and write a check off our joint account, a few days later we seperate. 2 years later I am getting arrested for a hot check off of that very account. The same check I wrote a few days before leaving. I am not perfect and it happened. Does it make me a bad person? No. Does it make me a hardened criminal? No.
On this issue I am on the fence. Do I think prisioners should get the comforts of home? NO
Do I think the Texas Legal System needs to be overhauled so that we are really rehabilitating people who are in jail? YES
Instead of spending your days watching television, lifting weights, playing cards or basketball, instead of sitting around talking about hitting the next lick when you get out of there, we should be focused on fixing the real issues.
How I think things should be:
With the number of people in prision with no high school diploma or GED, even those who can't read or write folks, we should make the first part of the day instructional time. You are either learning the basic skills you need no matter if you are in jail or if you are in the outside world or you are focusing on obtaining your GED.
If you already have these or once you complete this task, you should then be taught a trade: how to cut hair, be a welder, mechanic, truck driver...the list is endless.
Once class is over for the day, you head to work. By work I mean having a garden where you are growing the fruits and vegetables that you are eating while you are in prision. Tending to chickens, cows, etc because that too produces food to eat and by products that can be consummed.
You don't have to worry about the weight room because you are getting plenty of exercise working. In addition, you don't have to worry about as many fights because people are going to be too tired to want to fight. As far as the television goes, you need to be studying for your GED, reading books about your trade, reading for knowledge or spend some time with Jesus in the Bible.
People talk about how hard it is once they get out of prison in terms of finding a job, a place to live, etc and this combats all those situations. Does it make it perfect, no but it helps in a major way.
Plus if you know nothing about criminal charges let me enlighten you:
finding a decent place to live becomes almost impossible because everyone checks your background
finding a decent job without knowing a trade or having a college education is harder because of your background
Companies want all these tax breaks. We should be giving them a tax break for hiring someone with a background and paying them a decent wage.
I can tell you that Texas and how they list their charges is a major factor. I live it all the time. My charge reads : theft of property by check <$20 but >$500.
I wrote a check for $37 for medication for my child. I own that I did it but this is how they list it. At this rate I should have written the check for $499.00
I will stop there because I could go into how I feel about our legal system, our police departments, our schools, our churches and let's not forget the fact that IT STARTS AT HOME.
Until Next Time
